The Rise of AI Coding Assistants: A Game-Changer in Software Development?

In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence, a new breed of AI-powered coding assistants is emerging, promising to revolutionize the way software is developed. One such startup at the forefront of this trend is Cognition AI, a company that has managed to raise $21 million from high-profile investors like Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, despite being just two months old.

Founded by the Wu brothers, Scott and Neal, along with Steven Hao and Walden Yan, Cognition AI has developed a groundbreaking AI coding assistant called Devin. Unlike other coding assistants that merely suggest code or autocomplete tasks, Devin can take on and complete entire software projects independently. Users simply need to provide a job in natural language, such as “Create a website that maps all the Italian restaurants in Sydney” and Devin will handle the rest – from searching for the restaurants and gathering their details to building and publishing the website, all while fixing bugs on its own.

According to Scott Wu, the company’s CEO, Devin represents a significant breakthrough in AI’s ability to reason, which many experts believe is the next frontier in the field. “Teaching AI to be a programmer is actually a very deep algorithmic problem“, he says, drawing parallels between coding and the mental game of competitive programming, a field in which the Wu brothers have excelled.

While the exact nature of Cognition AI’s breakthrough remains a closely guarded secret, the company has hinted at unique ways of combining large language models with reinforcement learning techniques. This approach has apparently allowed Devin to handle long, complex tasks without losing coherence and incorporate user feedback midstream – capabilities that set it apart from other coding assistants.

The potential implications of AI coding assistants like Devin are vast. On one hand, they could free developers from mundane tasks and democratize software creation, allowing even those without coding skills to bring their ideas to life. On the other hand, there are concerns that such technologies could eliminate countless well-paying jobs and upend the software industry as we know it.

As the world of AI coding assistants continues to evolve, it is clear that companies like Cognition AI are at the forefront of a potentially game-changing trend. With the backing of major investors and a team of brilliant minds, including world-class competitive programmers, Cognition AI is well-positioned to push the boundaries of what is possible with AI in software development.

However, as with any disruptive technology, the rise of AI coding assistants raises as many questions as it answers. Will they ultimately empower developers and democratize software creation, or will they lead to widespread job losses and industry upheaval? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the world of software development is on the cusp of a major transformation, and AI coding assistants like Devin are leading the charge.

From Zero to $1M: How David Brusser Built an AI-Powered Excel Tool with No Code

David Brusser, a non-coder with a full-time job and a growing family, has recently made waves in the tech industry by building a no-code AI app that is now valued at over a million dollars. In a recent YouTube video, Brusser shares his remarkable journey and the strategies he employed to turn his idea into a successful business.

Brusser’s app is Formulabot.com, it helps people work smarter and faster with data. The app offers three main products: AI in spreadsheets (similar to ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets), formula generators that translate text into formulas using AI, and a data analyzer that allows users to upload data and get answers, analysis, charts, and modeling through natural language prompts.

One of the most impressive aspects of Brusser’s story is that he built the app using no-code tools, primarily relying on Bubble.io and YouTube tutorials. As he explains in the video, “If you were to code it, it would take much longer. And so that’s really where I was exposed to the no-code industry.” This approach allowed him to create an MVP within just a couple of weeks, despite having no coding experience.

Brusser’s launch strategy was equally impressive. He initially shared the app with colleagues at his full-time job, who were amazed by its capabilities. He then posted about the app on Reddit’s Excel subreddit, where it quickly became the top post of the day and, eventually, the week. As Brusser recounts, “I posted it there, it got some 10,000 upvotes, thousands of comments. I got thousands and thousands of people visiting the site, using the app.”

However, the app’s viral success came with a steep price tag. Brusser “blew through like $5,000 in Open AI API costs in days” and had to make a decision: “It’s either shut it down or keep going.” He chose the latter, implementing a donation link and running ads to recoup some of the costs. This experience, along with user feedback and impromptu phone calls with customers, helped shape the app’s evolution from a simple Excel formula generator to an all-in-one platform for data analytics.

As competition grew and Microsoft announced plans to integrate AI into their Office suite, Brusser realized he needed to differentiate his product. He focused on convenience, customization, and building features that couldn’t be easily replicated by ChatGPT or Microsoft. “Right now, my vision moving forward is to build something that cannot be replicated both in ChatGPT as well as Microsoft”.

David Brusser’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs, demonstrating that with determination, resourcefulness, and a willingness to learn, it’s possible to build a successful tech business without coding skills or significant upfront investment. As the no-code movement continues to gain momentum, we can expect to see more stories like Brusser’s, showcasing the democratization of tech entrepreneurship.

Why AI will never replace humans | Alexandr Wang | TEDxBerkeley

In a recent TEDxBerkeley talk, Alexandr Wang deeply involved in some of the most advanced AI projects globally, offered a compelling narrative that challenges the prevalent dystopian views of AI, suggesting instead that AI is a powerful ally to humanity, not its replacement. Wang’s background, heavily influenced by his parents, both leading scientists at Los Alamos, inspired him to pursue a path where technology could have a significant impact on the world. This foundation led him to establish Scale, a company at the forefront of creating high-quality datasets for AI, underpinning the belief that AI’s effectiveness is intrinsically linked to human insight and guidance.

Wang articulated several reasons why AI will never supplant humans. He highlighted the limitations of computers alone, emphasizing that programming, in its essence, is about instructing computers to perform tasks without the nuances of human judgment or intelligence. This revelation became apparent to Wang during his time at MIT, where his engagement with AI began to shape his understanding of its potential to address complex, nuanced problems, such as interpreting human emotions through facial expressions with notable accuracy.

A recurring theme in Wang’s talk was the symbiotic relationship between AI and humans. AI, according to Wang, necessitates human interaction for teaching, guiding, and ensuring that the algorithms’ outcomes align with our values and intentions. This process is crucial for AI to have ethical and fair applications. He shared an anecdote about his innovative approach to managing groceries through AI, humorously revealing a roommate’s food theft, to illustrate the practical challenges and data requirements for effective AI solutions.

Wang’s vision extends AI’s utility beyond mundane tasks, forecasting its role in supercharging human capabilities across various sectors, including healthcare and agriculture. He underscored AI’s potential in healthcare to alleviate the burden of repetitive tasks from doctors, enabling them to focus more on patient care. Similarly, in agriculture, AI’s ability to assess satellite imagery can provide vital insights for strategic decision-making, as demonstrated by Scale’s work in analyzing the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The talk concluded on an optimistic note, portraying AI as a “supercharger for humanity” that, when led by human insights, can unlock unprecedented creative and problem-solving potential. Wang’s message is clear: AI is not a threat but a transformative tool that, when integrated with human intelligence, can enhance our capabilities and lead us toward solving some of the world’s most pressing issues. His perspective invites us to reimagine the future of AI as one where human-led AI initiatives pave the way for a collaborative, impactful, and ethical advancement of technology.

War, AI and the New Global Arms Race | Alexandr Wang | TED

While Wang’s achievements in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) are undeniably groundbreaking, his recent TED Talk, “War, AI and the New Global Arms Race,” brings to light a certain naiveté in his understanding of geopolitics and the flawed reality of what he perceives as the U.S. democracy. Yet, it’s impossible to overlook his genuine passion for leveraging AI towards creating a better world.

Wang’s background, deeply rooted in a family of scientists involved in technologies that have historically reshaped warfare, provides him with a unique lens through which he views the future of global conflict. In his TED Talk, he paints a vivid picture of a world where AI-driven technologies like autonomous drones and cyber warfare dominate the battlefield. His narrative is compelling, drawing on historical parallels and potential future scenarios to underline the critical role AI might play in warfare. However, this perspective also inadvertently reveals a somewhat simplified view of global politics and the complex underpinnings of what constitutes “democracy”, particularly in the context of the United States.

Despite these oversights, Wang’s commitment to using AI for the greater good is unmistakable and commendable. He identifies key challenges in the AI arms race, notably the United States’ lag behind in leveraging data for military purposes and the tech industry’s reluctance to engage with defense projects. By citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a case study, Wang showcases the potential of AI to alter the dynamics of modern warfare, offering hope for smaller nations against more formidable adversaries.

Wang’s call to action for the tech community to contribute to national security and global democracy is a poignant aspect of his talk. It highlights his belief in the transformative power of technology to uphold democratic values and human rights. However, this appeal also underscores a gap in his understanding of the intricate dance of geopolitics and the realities of the so-called democratic systems he seeks to protect. His framing suggests a binary view of global affairs, overshadowing the nuanced realities and the often ambiguous nature of state actions and intentions.

So, there is a lot of pre-ready-made solutions.

And now goes the question:
How to make Text-to-Speech with Word Highlighting in any web app?

Well, it is quite easy. I sketched out a simple demo example based on the Web Speech API.
And, by the way, such tasks are easily can be solved by using ChatGPT, Gemini or another AI-agent, just send the prompt message:

Create a CodePen project that implements a simple Text-to-Speech (TTS) functionality with word highlighting. The application should have the following features:

  1. An input area where users can input the text they want to be read aloud.
  2. A button to initiate the TTS process.
  3. As the text is being read aloud, each word should be highlighted.
  4. The highlighting should move along with the spoken word.
  5. The application should use the Web Speech API for TTS functionality.
  6. Implement error handling for speech synthesis errors.

Tasks:

  1. Set up a new code CodePen project.
  2. Create an HTML structure with an input area, a button, and a container for the highlighted text.
  3. Write JavaScript code to handle the TTS functionality.
  4. Use the Web Speech API to synthesize speech from the input text.
  5. Implement word highlighting as the text is being spoken.
  6. Handle errors that may occur during speech synthesis.
  7. Test the application to ensure proper functionality.
  8. Optionally, style the application to make it visually appealing.
  9. Ensure the code is properly documented and organized.

See the Pen TTS with Word Highlighting Demo by Nickolai Yegorov (@e-Nicko) on CodePen.

Pretty cool, right?
It really is that easy these days!

This is a basic example to get started. It is easy to enhance it further by adding more features, such as controlling the speed of the speech (rate property), pausing and resuming speech, or handling more complex text formatting (just as Speechify, it will be cool to make light highlight for whole current sentence and main highlight for the current reading word). Additionally, you can style the highlighted text and its container using CSS to make it visually appealing.

Definitely, this is a great find today!

Surely will use this functionality in my digital products and services! Of course with better TTS voices and more advanced features.
